First Annual Composition Award Concert

May 17, 2017

The Barefoot Tango
Hannah Ryu

Mentored by John Tarrh

With emotional and vibrant passages, "The Barefoot Tango" expresses the feeling of running in nature in bare feet. The strings and percussion intertwine lyrically and actively to add life to the piece, allowing the listener to experience the power of music and to realize that there are beautiful sounds within our dramatic Earth.

Sketches of Holland
Christopher Ross
Mentored by Stuart Gurley

Trumpet - Alexander Tung
Alto - Alice Troop, Dylan Turner
Tenor - Chris Morse
Piano - Will Mukumal
Guitar - Jeffrey Gordon
Bass - Chris Ross
Drums - Darsan Swaroop Bellie

Chris began writing this tune as he was practicing singing intervals above himself on the bass. He figured out the melody using that sense of parallel intervals and the bridge section is inspired by the Charlie Haden tune, "La Pasionara."

24
Benjamin Maffa

Mentored by Spencer Gurley-Green

Vocals - Benjamin Maffa, Esme Goldfinger*
* Elise Counsel is singing in the concert in place of Esme Goldfinger

"24" is a work of hip-hop, influenced by modern, bass-heavy rap music. The idea for the beat arose from a Lana Del Ray sample and was brought to life with unique drums and a subtle beat switch-up.

Fantasia for Electric Guitar
Tim Watson

Mentored by Jamie Stewardson

Guitar - Tim Watson

This piece began as an etude meant to exercise classical right hand technique. The open G string rings throughout the entire first movement despite shifting harmony, hopefully unifying the otherwise chaotic collection of meter and key changes.

Silver Chalice
Chris Morse

Mentored by Josh Gilbert

Trumpet - Alexander Tung
Alto - Alice Troop, Dylan Turner
Tenor - Chris Morse
Piano - Will Mukumal
Guitar - Jeffery Gordon
Bass - Chris Ross
Drums - Darsan Swaroop Bellie

Drawing inspiration from the likes of Joe Henderson and Esteban Castro, Silver Chalice is a jazz waltz which makes use of modern voicings and parallel harmony.

Faustus
Adam Gurley-Green

Transcribed and arranged by Josh Gilbert

Tenor - Chris Morse
Piano - Josh Gilbert

This piece was composed by Adam Gurley-Green in 2011, for the Jazz Septet's performance with guest artist Jeff Galindo.
