Fourth Annual Composition Award Concert

June 5th, 2022

Mystery
Gabriel Lee

Mentored by Joshua Gilbert

Cello and Vocal Percussion - Gabriel Lee

"This piece is inspired by the works of Kevin Olusola, the beatboxer of the GRAMMY award-winning a-capella group Pentatonix. Olusola made popular the art of "cello-boxing" (cello and beatboxing). This piece is also inspired by Dmitri Shostakovich's first cello concerto, from its dissonant tone to its complex running passages. It conveys a sense of seriousness and abstractness as well, providing a rather darker mood while also leaving more questions to be asked."
Rodana
Tommy van der Laan

Mentored by Matthew Schwartz

Saxophone - Sam Offsey, Pat Donaher
Piano - Dan Gorbunov
Bass- Tommy van der Laan
Drums - Nick WIlliams

"Recently I have delved into music from the late composer, Chick Corea, and found an interest in his latin jazz style. I tried weaving in aspects of songs like Spain into the hood section and some melodic ideas from Armando's Rhumba."

The Bogos Binted
Michael George

Mentored by John Tarrh

Members of the LHS Wind Ensemble

"I wrote this piece to help grow my mind. I have always enjoyed arranging and writing music, but this piece is an example of everything I have learned up to this point. However, as time goes on, I still have more to add to the piece. This is only one theme, and I plan on expanding and adding more themes. I decided to call this piece "The Bogos Binted" because it was my temporary title, as I do for many of my compositions. However, the name stuck for some reason, as strange as it is, so I have kept it. I have written this piece in hope I conduct it for the LHS Wind Ensemble. I have grown attached to all of the members and they really liked my conducting."

Cherry Cola
Daniel Gorbunov
Mentored by Josh Gilbert

Saxophone - Sam Offsey, Pat Donaher
Piano - Dan Gorbunov
Bass- Tommy van der Laan
Drums - Nick WIlliams

"This piece draws on my love of neo-soul and R&B music, with a groove that makes you want to dance. At the center of this are deep, soulful chord progressions, a punchy bassline, and a laid-back feel with a smoothness like cherry cola."

In the Garden
Kira Tang
Mentored by Randy Hiller

Violin - Grace Wang, Sarah Fu
Viola - Lauren Wu
Cello - Eli Chang
Bass - Liam Ray

"'In the Garden' was written in honor of my a-ghim, my aunt, who passed away in 2021. In her free time, she loved to grow flowers and vegetables in her backyard. The repeated motifs in the piece are inspired by the tunes she sung to herself, the classical CDs she and my uncle played for me when I was little, and the music of Taiwan, her birthplace. Fueled by eighth note butterflies on fluttering wings and the blooming, right tones of purple cosmos buds, this piece conveys the journey of rediscovering the beauty of life while missing a loved one."

Backstage Duet
Mathew Schwartz

Mentored by Matthew Schwartz

Trumpet - Connor Ross
Alto - Matthew Schwartz
Tenor - Pat Donaher
Piano - Josh Gilbert
Drums - Nico Daglio Fine
Bass - Tommy van der Laan

"I wrote "Backstage Duet" a few months after the passing of the legendary trumpet player Roy Hargrove. I was listening to his cover of "Starmaker" and playing around on the piano, until the initial melody took shape. The title comes from the first time I met Mr. Hargrove, at the Village Vanguard in New York City. I asked him to sign a compilation album he had contributed to, he started singing the lyrics from the song, and I sang along with him. Considering how much I listened to his album, "Earfood" in high school, I figured this composition would be a good choice to perform at home!"
